Pathology Assistant

Location: Modesto, California   |   Work Location: On-site   |   Contract Type: Full-Time   |   Job Category: Allied Health   |   Salary Range: up to $80/hr

Working under the guidance of a pathologist, the Pathologist Assistant is responsible for performing detailed examinations, sectioning, and documentation of human tissue specimens. This role also involves providing support during intraoperative assessments, including frozen sections and tissue evaluations. Certification through the American Association of Pathologists’ Assistants or the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) is required.

Shift: Monday – Friday, 4:00 pm – 12:30 am

Responsibilities

  • Conduct detailed preparation, examination, and dissection of tissue samples.
  • Select appropriate sections for further processing, staining, and microscopic analysis.
  • Ensure accurate specimen labeling and accessioning.
  • Collect tissue samples, including blood and toxicology specimens, for advanced studies such as flow cytometry and immunohistochemistry.
  • Capture images of significant specimens as needed.
  • Assist in the selection and preparation of tissue for frozen section analysis.
  • Review patient medical records and relevant data in collaboration with the pathologist.
  • Consult with the attending pathologist to determine any specialized procedures required.
  • Maintain laboratory equipment and manage supply inventory.
  • Ensure cleanliness of workstations and proper disposal of biological waste.
  • Address and resolve any issues or discrepancies that arise during operations.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Biological Sciences or a related field.
  • Completion of a pathologists’ assistant program accredited by NAACLS.
  • Current certification from either the American Association of Pathologists’ Assistants or the ASCP.
  • Fundamental knowledge of human anatomy, surgical techniques, and general laboratory practices.
  • Proven ability to prepare tissue specimens and provide timely assistance to pathologists.
  • Proficiency or willingness to learn various software and laboratory information systems.
  • Strong technical skills in histological procedures.
