Under general supervision, the Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) or Medical Technologist (MT) performs waived, moderate, and high-complexity laboratory testing in accordance with CMS Standards and Certification: Laboratory Requirements (42 CFR 493). This position supports the delivery of accurate and timely diagnostic results that are essential to patient care.
Perform waived, moderate, and high-complexity testing using both manual and automated methods in compliance with established policies and procedures.
Prepare reagents, quality control materials, and other testing supplies as needed.
Perform routine and preventive equipment maintenance and document appropriately.
Assist with data analysis, instrument correlation, and evaluation of new instruments or procedures.
Maintain knowledge of specimen, reagent, and control storage requirements, including expiration and open dates.
Demonstrate full understanding of HIPAA’s “need to know” principle when handling patient information.
Enter test comments, verify results (RBV), and ensure accurate and timely result reporting.
Communicate all critical values promptly to authorized personnel, verifying patient identifiers and documenting communication details.
Utilize the LIS for inquiries, patient result printing, and report generation.
Identify and troubleshoot basic computer issues or escalate to IT when necessary.
Follow established downtime procedures and ensure proper documentation.
Review pending reports, note critical or delayed cases, and take appropriate follow-up actions.
Review and document quality control results; perform troubleshooting and corrective actions as needed.
Adhere to all SOPs, regulatory requirements, and accreditation standards.
Identify and resolve issues related to testing procedures, specimen quality, and result accuracy.
Verify all specimens and results using proper patient identification and quality checks before release.
Assist leadership in drafting, reviewing, and updating laboratory policies and procedures.
Participate in training and onboarding of new staff members.
Support ongoing accreditation readiness and compliance (CAP/DNV or equivalent).
Report safety incidents promptly through designated reporting systems (e.g., Midas/RDE).
Adhere to all safety protocols and promote a safe work environment.
Maintain required certifications and licenses, ensuring they remain current.
Complete all mandatory organizational and job-specific training within required timelines.
Bachelor’s degree in Clinical Laboratory Science, Microbiology, Chemistry, or a Biological Science – Required
MLT candidates must be eligible to sit for and pass MT/MLS (ASCP, AMT, or equivalent) certification within 6 months – Required
Required: Medical Technologist (MT) or Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) certification from ASCP, AMT, HEW, or equivalent board.
New graduates: Must obtain certification within 6 months of hire.
Maintain all clinical competencies as assigned by department leadership.
Minimum 1 year of experience in a clinical laboratory – Preferred
