Under the direction of laboratory leadership, serves as a senior technical expert within a high-volume surgical pathology grossing environment, providing guidance and technical direction to trainees and fellow Pathologists’ Assistants. This role functions as a practitioner, educator, and role model, specializing in the gross examination of complex oncologic specimens (including pancreatic, breast, urologic, and gynecologic resections) as well as routine benign resections and biopsies.
Works closely with pathologists, laboratory managers, and supervisory staff to make technical grossing decisions, determine when consultation is required, and troubleshoot specimen receiving and processing issues. Maintains broad competency across the full scope of Pathologists’ Assistant duties, including laboratory preparation, specimen receiving and accessioning, intraoperative frozen section evaluation, cryostat sectioning and staining, gross dissection, dictation, and specimen photography.
Demonstrates a strong understanding of the clinical relevance of tissue sampling and section selection, performing all duties with an emphasis on accuracy, efficiency, and quality. Participates in variable scheduling and rotation across multiple laboratory sites as needed, and provides technical support to autopsy and histology services when required. Performs additional related duties as assigned.
