Clinical Laboratory Scientist

The Clinical Laboratory Scientist plays a pivotal role in managing all aspects of hematology, coagulation, chemistry, and immunoassay testing. The primary objective is to achieve optimal accuracy in sample processing. Key duties include adhering to safety protocols, compliance with laboratory practices, sample processing, troubleshooting, and maintaining productivity/quality standards. Effective communication within the team and management is essential.

Responsibilities

  • Follow laboratory quality control policies, activities, and standard operating procedures (SOPs).
  • Ensure inventory is accurately maintained.
  • Review SOP and workflow updates promptly, and implement changes in real time.
  • Propose workflow improvements in alignment with laboratory best practices.
  • Conduct routine preventive maintenance of equipment and workspaces.
  • Notify supervisor if test systems deviate from acceptable performance standards.
  • Meet current performance metrics for work output.
  • Immediately report any issues that may impact test performance or results.
  • Engage in proficiency testing, ensuring sample testing mirrors patient specimen handling.
  • Complete Continuing Education Units (CEUs) as required for lab accreditation.
  • Attend team meetings to stay informed about incident reports and compliance issues.
  • Support additional duties as necessary, such as lot verifications, document control, and validations.
  • Perform basic pre-analytical operations, including patient identification verification, specimen compliance checks, and case management for exceptions.

Qualifications

  • Education:
    • Compliance with state licensing (if applicable) and educational requirements.
    • At least 60 semester hours from an accredited institution, with a minimum of 24 semester hours in laboratory science, or equivalent.
    • Completion of an accredited laboratory training program.
  • Skills:
    • Detail-oriented, with strong multitasking capabilities.
    • Adaptable to process changes.
    • Proficient in verbal and written communication.
  • Experience:
    • Minimum of 1 year of clinical laboratory experience (2-3 years preferred).
    • Strong understanding of quality assurance and quality control for test accuracy.
    • Broad knowledge in areas of hematology, coagulation, chemistry, and immunoassay.
  • Certifications:
    • Preferably holds a relevant certification (ASCP, AMT, or similar), unless state requirements dictate otherwise.
