The Supervisor, Analytical Laboratory oversees daily operations and performance of analytical laboratory processes utilizing immunoassay and/or LC-MS/MS technology. This role ensures high-quality testing, regulatory compliance, and effective supervision of laboratory personnel while supporting ongoing process improvements and technical development initiatives.
Provides day-to-day supervision of testing personnel and oversees reporting of laboratory test results for all CLIA-regulated methods.
Maintains required supervisory presence and accessibility through on-site, telephone, or electronic consultation.
Ensures laboratory operations comply with state and federal regulations, including CLIA General Supervisor responsibilities.
Monitors analytical performance, specimen examination, and adherence to established quality standards for immunoassay and/or LC-MS/MS workflows.
Identifies and resolves technical issues, working closely with laboratory leadership as needed.
Ensures Laboratory Occurrence Management (LOM) forms and corrective actions are completed accurately.
Participates in internal audits and proficiency testing.
Oversees and assists with preventive maintenance and calibration of laboratory instruments; coordinates with vendors for repairs or troubleshooting.
Develops, writes, and maintains Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and departmental forms.
Ensures adherence to Quality Assurance, HIPAA, confidentiality, safety regulations, and cybersecurity standards.
Provides direct supervision and training for Laboratory Technicians and Assistants in accordance with regulatory requirements.
Conducts performance evaluations for direct reports.
Oversees onboarding, competency assessments, and orientation of laboratory personnel.
Supports continuing education requirements and fosters a culture of professional development.
Performs technical studies to validate or improve clinical testing methods.
Collaborates with vendors on instrument validations and new technology implementations.
Assists with advanced troubleshooting involving equipment, instruments, and assay performance.
Participates in initiatives related to quality, safety, workflow efficiency, and document management.
Ensures prompt implementation of remedial actions when test systems deviate from performance specifications.
Maintains awareness of evolving laboratory needs and supports organizational goals with flexibility.
Performs additional duties as assigned.
Bachelor’s degree in chemical, physical, biological, or clinical laboratory science (required).
Current California CLS license (Generalist, Toxicologist Scientist, or Clinical Chemist Scientist).
Out-of-state Medical Technologists may be considered if able to obtain a California CLS license within six months of hire.
Bachelor’s degree with 6+ years of CLS/MT experience, or
Master’s degree with 4+ years of clinical laboratory experience, or
PhD with 2+ years of clinical laboratory experience.
Minimum 2 years of experience after obtaining CLS/MT licensure.
Supervisory experience strongly preferred.
Knowledgeable in clinical laboratory testing methods, techniques, equipment, and supplies.
Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills at all organizational levels.
High attention to detail and accuracy.
Demonstrated ability to lead staff and manage projects effectively.
Must meet continuing education requirements per California Department of Health Services.
