Cytotechnologist – Cytology

Location: Palo Alto, California   |   Work Location: On-site   |   Contract Type: Full-Time   |   Job Category: Allied Health   |   Salary Range: $60.00 – $70.00/hr

This role involves performing detailed microscopic evaluations of cytologic samples obtained from various body systems. The evaluations include identifying and distinguishing between normal, abnormal, and potentially malignant cells, which may indicate conditions such as cancer, pre-cancerous changes, inflammation, infection, endocrine disorders, and effects of treatments like radiation or chemotherapy. The cytotechnologist is tasked with generating accurate, concise reports for each case, which are then entered into the laboratory’s information system. The role also includes assisting physicians during fine needle aspiration procedures and preparing specimens for microscopic analysis.

Responsibilities

  • Assist radiologists and physicians during fine needle aspiration procedures.
  • Adhere to all relevant health and safety regulations.
  • Participate in the daily review and assessment of cases.
  • Engage in quality improvement initiatives as needed.
  • Continuously pursue professional education to stay current with developments in the field.
  • Conduct microscopic evaluations of specimens and generate detailed reports.
  • Carry out specimen preparation and staining as required.
  • Perform additional tasks as assigned to support laboratory operations.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline from an accredited institution.
  • Proficiency in operating and maintaining laboratory equipment.
  • Strong analytical skills for interpreting data and drawing conclusions.
  • Effective communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Ability to follow detailed instructions and adapt to new procedures.
  • Strong organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks and adjust to shifting priorities.
  • Knowledge of laboratory techniques, infection prevention protocols, and relevant regulatory requirements.
  • Technical expertise in specialized areas within the laboratory setting.
  • Cytotechnologist certification
  • ASCP certification (American Society for Clinical Pathology)
