Lead Clinical Laboratory Scientist (Blood Bank/Immunohematology)

We are seeking an experienced Lead Clinical Laboratory Scientist to join a high-performing transfusion medicine laboratory. This individual will provide both technical expertise and daily operational leadership while performing moderate- and high-complexity laboratory testing in accordance with CLIA, CAP, FDA, state regulations, and current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP).

The ideal candidate has a strong background in immunohematology or reference laboratory testing and enjoys mentoring laboratory professionals, maintaining quality systems, and supporting continuous operational excellence.

Shift Schedule:

  • Monday–Friday, 6:00 AM – 2:30 PM
  • Rotating overnight, weekend, and holiday on-call schedule (shared among approximately 3–4 team members)
  • On-call compensation: $2.00/hour (when not actively working)
  • + $1.50 added to hourly when working on-call hours

Responsibilities

  • Perform and interpret moderate- and high-complexity testing on patient and donor specimens.
  • Analyze, verify, and release laboratory results while maintaining the highest standards of accuracy and quality.
  • Perform complex immunohematology procedures including antibody investigations, compatibility testing, antigen typing, and donor serologic testing.
  • Support day-to-day laboratory operations by assisting with workflow coordination and technical oversight.
  • Train, mentor, and assess laboratory personnel on testing procedures, instrumentation, laboratory information systems, and departmental workflows.
  • Maintain employee training records and competency documentation.
  • Perform routine maintenance, troubleshooting, calibration, and preventive maintenance on laboratory instrumentation.
  • Monitor quality control data, investigate deviations, implement corrective actions, and maintain required documentation.
  • Assist with quality assurance activities, SOP revisions, process improvements, and preparation for regulatory inspections.
  • Maintain inventory of laboratory supplies, reagents, and consumables while ensuring proper stock rotation and expiration management.
  • Review testing completed by internal departments and outside reference laboratories to ensure accuracy and completeness.
  • Assist with donor testing follow-up, confirmatory testing, and reconciliation of external laboratory results.
  • Participate in the preparation and manufacturing support of specialized blood products as operational needs require.
  • Provide technical consultation and laboratory support to healthcare providers and internal departments.
  • Serve as a technical resource for troubleshooting instrumentation, testing methodologies, and laboratory processes.
  • Maintain accurate documentation while ensuring compliance with all applicable regulatory and accreditation standards.
  • Participate in departmental projects, process improvement initiatives, and implementation of new laboratory procedures.
  • Promote a collaborative, safety-focused, and patient-centered laboratory environment.

Qualifications

Required

  • Active California Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) License or California Clinical Immunohematology Scientist (CIS) License.
  • Minimum of three years of experience performing moderate- or high-complexity clinical laboratory testing.
  • Working knowledge of CLIA, CAP, FDA regulations, and laboratory quality systems.
  • Experience performing quality control, quality assurance, instrument maintenance, and documentation.
  • Strong communication, organizational, and leadership skills.

Preferred

  • Experience in Immunohematology Reference Laboratory (IRL) or advanced transfusion medicine.
  • Specialist in Blood Banking (SBB), BB(ASCP), or equivalent advanced certification.
  • Previous experience serving as a CLIA Technical Supervisor or laboratory lead.
  • Experience supporting regulatory inspections and laboratory accreditation activities.
